Childhood immunization, travel and other vaccinations

Vaccination is an important and effective means of disease prevention. Consistent with our focus on preventative health, doctors at Sheehans encourage and provide a wide range of vaccination services, including all free government vaccines and most private vaccines.

The number of illnesses which are preventable via vaccinations are numerous and growing, ranging from influenza, COVID, measles, to whooping cough and RSV, to shingles and cervical cancer.  At any age group vaccination is important and potentially life saving, so please talk to your doctor.

To prevent illnesses whilst overseas, please discuss your travel vaccine needs at least one month (preferably 6 months) before your travel.

Cancer prevention

Cancer is a leading cause of death in Australia, so prevention must be taken very seriously as you get older.  Apart from the importance of lifestyle, which generally involves stopping smoking, limiting alcohol use, limiting excessive UV exposure, eating a good diet, keeping physically active and maintaining a healthy weight, cancer screening is an important strategy which can save lives.

Cancer screening programs aim to detect cancer early (often even before the cancer develops), resulting in timely treatment which then either prevents the development of cancer altogether, or reduces the risk of cancer death.

There are many cancer screening programs in Australia.  Here are some important examples.  For more details, please talk to your doctor.

Skin cancers can be successfully treated or even prevented if found early, so we strongly recommend having a skin check by your GP every year.

For bowel cancer screening, faecal occult blood test (FOBT) is recommended every 2 years between the age of 45 to 74 years.

For breast cancer screening, mammogram and self breast examination (SBE) is recommended every 2 years between 50 to 74 years.

For cervical cancer screening, cervical screening test (CST) is recommended every 5 years between the age of 25 to 74 years.  If you prefer, you can do self collection these days - please ask your doctor.

If you are current or past smoker, lung cancer screening may be indicated.  Eligibility criteria is more complex, please discuss with your doctor.

Heart health check and Diabetes check

Heart disease and diabetes are the leading causes of chronic illness and death in Australia. These conditions can be prevented through healthy behaviours like eating a healthy diet, being active, maintaining a healthy weight and being smoke free. Many people may not know their risk of developing heart disease and diabetes, especially since you often can’t feel risk factors like high blood pressure, glucose and cholesterol.

Having a Heart Health Check and diabetes check is an important first step to protecting your health.  Please ask your doctor.

Dietitian is also available at Sheehans.  Please ask reception.

For more information about heart health check and how to keep your heart healthy please visit the Heart Foundation's website.  Multilingual translated information is also available here.

Health assessment, medication review and chronic disease management plans

If you suffer from one or more chronic ailments, such as diabetes or asthma, please check with your doctor to see if you could benefit from the formulation of a chronic disease management plan.

If you are 75 years or older, please arrange to have a health assessment.  These assessments should ideally be performed every year.

If you regularly take 5 or more medications, check with your doctor if you could benefit from a home medicine review.
